If you receive a GEDCOM file from me or someone else and the GEDCOM
file comes as a part of the email (imbedded or inserted into the text of
the email) and not as an attachment, here's what to do:
1. With the email with the GEDCOM in it open on your screen, use your
cursor to select (highlight) all of the GEDCOM portion of the email(be sure
to get all of the GEDCOM text and nothing else).
2. Use the copy command from the EDIT menu.
3. Open a word processing program and create a new, blank document.
4. Paste the copied text into a new document using the paste command
from the EDIT menu.
5. Name the document and be sure it ends with .ged (example: family.ged)
Note: The .ged suffix is critical or it won't work.
5. Save this document in text format, not the standard format of the
word processing program (Note: It is critical that you save it in text format
or it won't work)
6. Close the document and ignore any warnings about losing formatting
or anything else.
7. Open any genealogy program that will import a GEDCOM file, select
the document you just created as the source and import the file to your
genealogy program.
Be sure you follow ALL of the above instructions or it will not work.
Also, remember that if you do not have a genealogy program that supports
GEDCOM, no amount of coversions will allow you to use the GEDCOM file.
